In low – land reservoirs you can go crappie fishing much like in natural lakes. Crappie will be called such names by the locals such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. Low land reservoirs will hold good populations of white perch. You will be able to catch crappie with traditional crappie baits in these reservoirs.

Low land reservoirs are th shallowest of the impoundment reservoirs. Many times these reservoirs are no more then 15 foot in depth. The deepest part of low land reservoirs will be the old river channel close to the dam area. Low land reservoirs will have vast flats with timber and thick vegetation ideal habit for speckled bassThere is little current in these reservoirs so your crappie fishing patterns will be similar to those you use in a natural lake. For example in a natural lake that is fairly clear water with an abundance of weed vegetation you would concentrate crappie fishing along the edges using various crappie baits like crappie jigs and plastic grubs tipped with wax worms or livebaits such as crappie minnows, flathead minnows, shiners or small crayfish. In low land reservoirs that are clear with abundant vegetation you would follow the same pattern.

You will locate calico bass by fishing the edges of weed beds and submerged brush (just like my example above). You will also find pole crappie in the old creek channel or river bed. You will also be ale to catch crappie in large flats where there are roaming paper mouth by drifting. Many times you will also find white perch in the wide inlet areas of the reservoir.

Low land reservoirs will also have many shallow bays and low islands that are crappie magnets that are great locations for catching crappie. You can drift these areas with your crappie rods set at deferent depths with a combination of crappie rods set up with a crappie jig and a plastic grub tipped with wax worms and also crappie live bait such as crappie minnows or shiners.

You can also go crappie fishing by drifting or trolling points that have a hard bottom. These areas will normally hold roaming crappie. You can sometimes catch crappie using submerged crappie crank baits and this is an excellent crappie fishing technique to find what depth the strawberry bass are located.

Just a note of reference, the old main river or channel will seldom be close to the shore line. This area is always a hotspot for calico bass. A good way to locate the old channel is using a topographical map in combination with a GPS and good fishing finder.

If you target submerged structure along the edges of the old channel you can catch crappie. You can use a re variety of different crappie baits that will allow you to fish very close to the old river channels edge and drop your bait into the drop off. This is an excellent technique to catch crappie that are suspended there

Once the crappie have moved to drop off ledges normally they will continue to hold there or move to close by deeper rock cover if it is available. You can catch crappie by using crappie jigs tipped with live crappie baits such as crappie minnows,flathead minnows,shiners,and shad if they are there. Fish your crappie baits just vertical or horizontal to identified drop off edge locations or deep rock cover approximately 5 to 10 feet off bottom, white perch will typically hold at these depths during the late fall going into winter. In natural lakes you will find drop off edges in a variety of different crappie fishing locations. Look for edges there is remaining weed growth such as at locations inside bends in the lake. You will also find excellent drop off edges where there is combination of remaining weed growth and rock cover. Your prime crappie fishing locations to concentrate on in the fall season will be where there is remaining weed growth, and rock cover combined together and adjacent to a drop off into deeper water. You will normally find these locations along bends in the lake contour. Fall calico bass will be normally be feeding on plankton or crappie minnows or shad that are feeding on the plankton. A good fall crappie bait would be artifical crappie baits that resemble crappie minnows or shad or Live crappie baits such as crappie minnows,small shad,shiners, and fathead minnows. You can also use small crayfish when you are fishing off the bottom in rock cover. As the remaining weed beds die off strawberry bass will move to rock piles, humps, sloop points, that drop into the lake basin, and transitional points that go from a hard pan bottom to a soft mucky bottom. Concentrate your crappie fishing efforts after the weed die off to the areas just mentioned.

The water temperature during the pre-spawn period is typically between 50 degrees farenhieght to 63 degrees farenhieght. During the pre-spawn period paper mouths are changing their daily patterns getting ready for the upcoming spawning period.

During the pre-spawn period the speckled bass are searching for good spawning grounds to have their young. They require a solft, but not to mucky bottom because the males will be sweeping out the nest from time to time. The soft bottom needs to be close to cover which could be stumps, fallen trees, brush piles, reeds, or stalks that are at the appropriate depth for spawning.

The proper depth for spawning is determined by the water clarity where the strawberry bass are located. The clearer the water the deeper speckled perch must go to spawn. In extremely clear lakes this may be at depths up to 20fett deep. In speckled bass waters that have average clarity, typically speckled bass spawn in depths of 3 to 6 feet. In mudy or murky waters the spawning depths may be only 2ft or less. The way the depth is determined is by how deep the light penetrates the most. Crappies will spawn right below that point. Light is required for the paper mouths in the gestation period.

The best spawning locations for speckled perch are typically bays , coves, and back water areas that have a gravel-sand, sand, sand marl, and sand-silt bottoms.

Female pole crappies will start the migration to the spawning locations when the water temperature reaches 50 degrees farenhight. And they will stay near the spawning areas. To catch these females during the pre-spawn period go bait fishing with crappie live baits such as crappie minnows and shiners, or small crayfish. To catch the male strawberry bass you will have to fish deep cover close to the spawning areas during the pre-awn period. You can use crappie jigs and long crappie jigging poles to get into the deep cover. During the pre-spawning period papermouths will feed aggressively. If you can locate the crappie spawning areas during the pre-spawn period you will catch crappie while bait fishing using various crappie baits.

The name paper mouth is very fitting for the crappie. This nick name is very fitting of a crappie that is caught while bait fishing because there mouths are paper thin and the hook can pull out very easy so you need to be very careful to not over do it when you set the hook. This fact alone makes it very difficult to land a large pole crappie.

Both White and black crappie papermouth look very similar but there are a few different identification marks. Both white crappie and black crappie have dark – olive or golden or brownish backs. The white speckled bass look much lighter then the black speckled bass when caught while bait fishing. During the spawn it is hard to tell male white and black pole crappie apart because the male whit crappie will darken like the black crappie during the spawning period.

One easy way to tell the white papermouth from the black crappie is by counting the number of spines located at the dorsal fin. White white perch will have 5 to 7 spines, while the black crappie will have 7 to 8 spines. The white calico bass will have a have a shorter distance between the dorsal fin first spine to a point between the eyes, then the black papermouth. The white speckled perch takes a more “s” or
hump shape then the black pole crappie where the back rises from the head. The black crappie has a more round shape.

Both white papermouth and black crappie, are built for speed and maneuverability. They move in cover very easily because of their thin bodies. In cover you catch crappies while bait fishing fairly easy if you use the right crappie baits. The white calico bass and the black crappie are not the only speices of crappie. For years white and black speckled bass have been cross breeding to make a very stable hybrid speckled perch population. Also many hybrids have been raised in captivity for stocking. They have
been stocked in new habitat locations throughout the Untied States to create new crappie habitat areas.

Reservoirs offer some fantastic crappie fishing if you know where to Look! The crappie species has been given odd names thought out the years such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth. The key to catching crappie is understanding where the white perch are located in reservoirs during a certain seasonal period. You can have all the latest and greatest crappie fishing gear but it will not do you any good if cannot locate any speckled perch.

A reservoir typically is defined as body of water that has been created by damming up a river. Types of reservoirs vary drastically so you need to do your home work before you go crappie fishing in one of these water impoundments and expect to catch crappie. The good thing about reservoirs is that they are man made so in most cases topographical map information is available to do your planning for your next crappie fishing trip.

Reservoirs are classified by their topography type based on the river that was dammed. Like I said before all reservoirs are not the same. Reservoirs range from large deep flooded canyons to shallow lowland wetland impoundments and each different reservoir type will have it’s own unique classification in order to develop your crappie fishing pattern.

One thing that is common about all reserervoirs is that white perch thrive in the majority of them so its well worth the effort to learn what needed to go crappie fishing in them. Just about any crappie bait such as live baits like small shad,crappie minnows, shiners flathead minnows and small crayfish can be used to catch crappie.

Typically a reservoir can be divided into three areas when you are doing your planning. Of course the deepest end will be area number one. This is the area closest to the dam in every reservoir. Area number two is where the new creek arm created by the damming blends in with the old creek channel. This area is always a good spot to locate papermouth and it is likely you can catch crappie here.

A good method of fishing for crappie in area number two is by setting up a number of your crappie fishing rigs at various depths tipped with live bait and artificial crappie jigs. When you start to catch crappie you can anchor off and continue to fish. Make sure you change the depth of all your crappie rods to the same depth that you started catching crappie. Area three is the shallowest of the three areas and is typically the farthest distance away from the dam. Typically these areas are great locations to catch crappie because there is abundance of good forage for crappie food. There also an abundance of structure in this area and during the spring this the area of the reservoir you want to fish because the calico bass will spawn here

Not all rivers just like not all lakes hold crappie. Crappies all over their habitat range are called a lot of different names such as calico crappie, speckled perch, speckled bass white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. Typically warm water river basins like the Mississippi will hold papermouth in their back water areas which can be quite expansive.

Typically you will catch crappie in river systems that are middle aged in geological terms. These rivers are slow flowing, shallow and have large flood planes that many times create large back water areas that are excellent white perch habitat areas to catch crappie. River systems from Minnesota to Louisiana that have back water areas will hold large populations of speckled bass. You will find papermouth in backwater areas that are out of current. strawberry bass will thrive in these areas if there is an abundant crappie food chain for forage. Head for brush piles, stump fields, deadfalls, and wood cover.

The average depth in many of these river back water areas is typically 5 to 6 ft so a flat bottom boat will work best to get to these areas. Because of the numerous stumps make sure you use a prop on your motor that is not stainless steel so you will shear your pin or just dent your prop if you hit a stump. This will save from loosing a lower end on your outboard motor.

There are many different crappie fishing baits that you can use to catch crappie in these areas. Threadfin shad and gizzard shad make excellent crappie live bait but they must be caught fresh while you are out fishing because they must be fished alive and they die quickly in captivity. Crappie minnows, flathead minnows, shiners, small crayfish will work well too. Crappie fishing jigs with soft plastic grubs tipped with live baits such as crappie minnows, wax works work well also. Or you can use a crappie jig with just a small crayfish.

You can also use crappie jigs with soft plastic grub imitations or a small crayfish Imitation also. To make these bait more inticing to the speckled bass you could tip them with wax worm to make the calico crappie Crappie crank baits will work well fished on the edge lines of brush stump fields, and weedlines. To fish your crappie jig setups use a small fixed or slip bobber that is easily adjusted for depth. You will want a long crappie fishing rod to extend over into hard to get to brush areas. Also.
